Equipment Monitoring Systems
Early detection of problems and appropriate responses are an important skill and responsibility for operators.
Engine Temperature
Responding to gauges and warning systems is very important. A 'needle and scale' gauge for engine temperature is usually included in the instrument group. Remember to check the gauge regularly, and never ignore a climbing engine temperature.
Oil Pressure
Another very important monitoring task is to check for proper operation of the low engine oil pressure warning system. The warning light should be on when the key is turned to the first position, and must go out within a few seconds after the engine starts. Never ignore an oil pressure warning system. Immediate shut down is generally required for either low oil pressure or excessive coolant temperature.
Monitoring Systems of Sensors
Dozers include monitoring systems of sensors, warning lights and audible signals (beepers and buzzers). Monitoring systems have different levels of urgency, depending on the severity of the problem Generally, a flashing indicator light means the system needs attention soon. A constantly illuminated indicator light means the operator must change the machine operation, or remedy the mechanical condition or damage could result. When an alarm sounds, the operator must change machine operation or shut down immediately, or the machine will be damaged.
Systems will always include monitoring of:
Systems vary but will typically warn the operator about:
Operators must also rely on their own senses to identify problems as they develop. In general, problem symptoms include unusual noises, vibration, smells, leaks, cracks, etc.

Systems will always include monitoring of:
- low engine oil pressure
- unusual voltage indicating problems with the charging system
- high engine coolant temperature
Systems vary but will typically warn the operator about:
- excessive hydraulic oil temperature
- low coolant fluid level
- low hydraulic oil level
- excessive restriction in the air filter
- excessive restriction in the hydraulic filter
